Prayer for the End of Violence Against the LGBTQ+ Community
Last weekend it was announced that a pickup had plowed through a group of people waiting to start the Pride Parade in Florida. We all thought it. Here we go again. Violence against the LGBTQ+ community. In the end it was just a horrible accident.
Violence and Crimes against the LGBTQ+ community has risen over the years. LGBTQ+ people are nearly four times more likely than non-LGBTQ+ people to experience violent victimization, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault, according to a study done by the UCLA School of Law.
As we approach the end of Pride Month, let us seek tangible ways that we can be part of the solution to prevent crimes against the LGBTQ+ community. Actively engage in conversations on how our communities of faith can be welcoming and advocates for the LGBTQ+community.
Let us pray:
God you have called us to proclaim “peace to your house” but our siblings of the LGBTQ+ may not always feel that they can have peace and safety, even in their own home. Help us to be advocates and welcoming to those who fear being their true self.
Compassionate Jesus, on the days where the work for justice, reconciliation and peace feel like to much, help lighten our loads. Soften our hearts to welcome people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. Teach us to learn and relearn, with humility and honestly. Open the doors to the paths where we can support and help in the creation of a world where all God’s people are welcomed and loved.
