A Gathering for Youth Ministry
On Sunday, August 28, a “Support and Resource Gathering for Youth Ministry” took place at the Johnsonburg Camp and Retreat Center. Under the leadership of the Young Leader Formation Team, eighteen persons from fourteen churches gathered for a time of fellowship, growth and support.
Using worship and leadership resources from the Presbyterian Youth Triennium that was unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19, participants had opportunities to share their circumstances, challenges, and hopes for youth ministry. Then followed a time to relax on the Johnsonburg grounds, including waterside with canoes, and walking the labyrinth.
Upon regrouping, a series of discussions took place, largely around the topics that participants noted before the retreat. These included local mission opportunities and partnership in more distant mission trips; confirmation and age-appropriate resources; resources that Johnsonburg can provide our churches; and gender identity, originating from the experiences of campers and leaders earlier this summer.
The Presbytery’s involvement in this important ministry also took the stage. Among the many ways the Presbytery and its resources may serve you as you care for your children, youth, and young adults, look for information on: a Young Adult Advisory Delegate to the Synod of the Northeast’s Synod Assembly; a brewing partnership between Highlands and Johnsonburg to provide youth leadership in places that could use support; and an enhanced website page looking to promote opportunities to join mission projects and trips of other congregations, the sharing of VBS materials — and where you can boast in Christ of the things your youth are doing! This, on top of the significant support that Highlands already provides for the Triennium, and in aiding YLF’s mission.
The day ended with worship, song, and a delicious Camp dinner!
Thank you to the YLF Team, panel and worship leaders, Camp Johnsonburg, and to all of the congregational leaders who contribute so much to this vital ministry, and to our day away. Watch for future opportunities to engage with others in serving the younger among us!
