With fiscal caution, the Highlands-Nairobi Presbyterian Partnership has restarted its scholarship program supporting children of impoverished families in both urban and rural Kenya. For 2021, the H-NPP has expanded its modest restart with a 50% increase of the number of students provided their essential annual school fees. Highlands contributors to the Partnership now support six primary school students of Nairobi’s Soweto Presbyterian Education Centre (P.E.C.) plus three at the rural Kibwezi Polytechnic.

The current cost of these annual sponsorships is $210 for primary school and $360 for technical education; thus a total of $2,350 is contributed to the two schools this year. The Highlands-Nairobi Presbyterian Partnership is grateful for the contributions of congregations and individuals that have enabled our funding these nine children’s education, and commends their commitment to their education. Continued growth of the annual sum contributed by donors toward such scholarships will allow the H-NPP to increase the number of annual scholars awarded.

The sponsored students are informed their fees are provided by anonymous donors within Highlands Presbytery, and are requested to write a letter of response to the donors. Each
sponsored student is celebrated with a personalized birthday greeting card sent via email to their school.

Handwritten letters from the 2021 students are available for you to read below. We remind you that English is a second or third language for Kenyan students, who first learn their tribal tongue at home, encounter East African Swahili as they expand their world, and are required to learn English as the national language. So please read the letters with that awareness, a requirement of Kenyan students far beyond that asked of our U.S. children.

The letters are from Soweto PEC 3rd graders Emmanuel Gitau, Ann Muthoni and Daniel Mumo; 4th graders Shantel Shannon, Olive Mwende and Evans Ongaye. Kibwezi Polytechnic students are Miriam Meundi Kimundu, Monicah Wanzuu Nzioki and Sammy Nysamai Kioko.
