In anticipation of Genesis 32:22-31

Holy One, remembering how Jacob wrestled with God, help us to remember with gratitude and thanksgiving those times we have struggled with adversity far greater than ourselves, and yet at the end of the day we remained standing. The challenge may have been for a day, a season, or on-going even now. We may have wondered whether the sun would ever rise to end this dark night. And as a result of this experience we may limp, in body, mind, or spirit, for one earth’s spin, or our remaining cycles around the sun.

But having survived another day, we are fortified for the days ahead. Like Jacob, we are blessed to know that you have called us by name, and we are yours. Surrounded by your saints, those with us and those gone before us, we are cheered by that name as we run the race set before us, no matter how difficult it is. And we are blessed to see you face to face, in the people that surround us, and in the one in the mirror.

The struggles are real, and there is no denying them. But because the son has been raised for us, we can trust that eventually the sun will rise upon us. Hardship will not prevail and it does not have the last word, for yours is the final “Amen!” May we join with all creation in trusting, and echoing, that promise. Amen.
