Prayer for Earth Day

This past week, we observed Earth Day 2025. Giving us an opportunity to reflect not only on environmental concerns, but on the sacred trust God has given us as stewards of God’s  creation.

Earth Day began in 1970 as a national teach-in on April 22, igniting a global movement for environmental care. Though it may sound like a familiar refrain, we have but one Earth, entrusted to us by God. As people of faith, we are called not merely to live on Earth but to protect and preserve it as part of the sacred trust given to us.

Caring for the earth is both a collective and individual act of faithfulness. On a global scale, nations must collaborate in ways that renew and restore the created world. But just as importantly, each of us is invited into the daily work of tending to and caring for creation. Simple actions such as reusing, recycling, composting, can become spiritual disciplines of care and gratitude.

Even the smallest act holds sacred significance. Plant something. Nourish a bit of soil. Support the pollinators that sustain our food and ecosystems. A pot of marigolds on your doorstep may seem small, yet in God’s economy, no act of care is ever wasted.

Listen to the call of the Spirit, who invites us into a life of gratitude and responsibility. We are called to be faithful stewards of the earth every day.

Let us pray:

As we pray for the new heaven and new earth, O God.
we give thanks for this earth, our partner in your service.
Move us to hear your voice in the song of the sparrow,
to see your face reflected in the river.
Awaken us to your greatness through the winds of the storm,
and the scent of your grace on the morning dew.
Empower us to hear your prophets in the croaks of evening frogs,
to read your gospel in the webs of writing spiders.

In your great mercy you call us to care for your creation,
to uphold one another, and to pray for your world.
Hear our prayers for the healing of the earth.
Hear our prayers for clean water so that all may drink.
Hear our prayer for the right use of resources so there may be a future for all.
Hear our prayer for careful tending of the land and the seas so all may be in balance.
hear our prayer for people and places damaged by war so that all may know peace.

With confidence that you hear our prayers,
we offer ourselves for your good purposes,
watching and waiting for the healing of your creation
as we work toward your coming reign.

Amen.
