Commission on Preparation for Ministry and Leadership Development Orientation

Lego Activity at CPMLD Orientation

In early March, the Commission on Preparation for Ministry and Leadership Development gathered for a time of orientation, reflection, and shared learning around the work of nurturing and equipping leaders across the Presbytery of the Highlands.

The gathering began in Scripture, dwelling in Ephesians 4:11–16, which speaks of the body of Christ being built up as each part works together in love . That grounding shaped the day, centering the commission’s work not simply as process or oversight, but as a calling to equip, support, and walk alongside those discerning and growing into leadership.

From there, the group moved into hands-on work, using LEGO builds to reflect on the current story of church leadership. Models began to surface familiar realities. Places of vitality and growth alongside areas of strain and uncertainty. Stories of leaders navigating call, responsibility, and change. As these models were shared, common patterns emerged, reminding the group that leadership formation is both deeply personal and widely shared across the church.

The conversation then shifted to what faithful accompaniment looks like. Not fixing, but walking with. Not rushing decisions, but creating space for discernment, growth, and maturity. This reflected the core purpose of the commission to nurture, guide, and support those preparing for ministry while ensuring spiritual depth and clarity of call .

Attention was also given to hidden strengths in leadership development. What churches and individuals need, but may not yet recognize. Gifts that are present but not always named. Opportunities for growth that require encouragement, structure, and intentional support. The conversation reinforced that leadership is not only formed through formal pathways, but also through relationship, mentorship, and ongoing care.

As the day continued, the focus expanded to how the commission functions as one team with many roles. The interconnected nature of the work became clear, along with the importance of trust, communication, and clarity. Questions of responsibility, overlap, and collaboration were explored, pointing to the need for strong relationships within the commission and across the presbytery.

Group Activity

The gathering concluded with reflection on individual call and shared responsibility. Each person considered their place in the story of this work, what they bring, what feels challenging, and how they can support one another moving forward.

The tone of the day was thoughtful, grounded, and hopeful. The work of preparing leaders for ministry is complex, but it is also deeply meaningful. There was a clear sense that through careful accompaniment, shared wisdom, and a commitment to growth, the Presbytery of the Highlands is continuing to raise up leaders equipped for this season and the one ahead.
