Remembering the Stories for Memorial Day

Diving into genealogy through Ancestry, DNA, and historic newspapers often leads to incredible discoveries. Recently, while searching Newspapers.com, I uncovered a piece of my own family history that had been forgotten: my Uncle Bud, my dad’s oldest brother, received a Purple Heart while serving in Italy during World War II. No one in the family had ever told me. The story almost faded from living memory.

Though Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in service, the holiday underscores a profound collective loss across generations of military conflicts.

This Memorial Day, let us commit to telling the stories of those who served and those who we lost. Pass on these stories to the younger generations, ensuring that their service and sacrifice is not forgotten.

God of Peace,
as we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence,
we also look back on centuries marked and scarred by war,
and we ask you to guide our memory.

We bring before you the stories we have learned,
the memories shared with us,
and the memories we ourselves carry:
of the War for Independence, the Civil War,
two World Wars, the Korean War, the Vietnam War,
the Gulf Wars, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—
as well as the conflicts too often forgotten,
the wars we scarcely know,
and those whose stories remain untold.

We bring our childhood memories of heroic soldiers—
brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles,
fathers, mothers, and grandparents—
and our memories of families grieving those they loved.

We bring our gratitude for acts of courage and sacrifice,
our sorrow at such profound loss,
our despair that wars continue to happen,
and our struggle to understand it all.

God of Peace, we bring you our memories.
Help us to seek the truth and shape a more hopeful future.

We bring before you the faded memories of wars
that briefly captured our attention and were then forgotten—
conflicts in distant places,
or tragedies too painful to hold in our hearts for long.

We confess that our compassion often fades,
as we turn away from the discomfort and horror of war.

God of Peace, we bring you our memories.
Help us to seek the truth and shape a more hopeful future.

We pray for all who suffer because of war—
for the wounded and disabled,
for those living with trauma,
for those who grieve, and those consumed by anger.

We pray for communities destroyed,
for nations devastated,
for generations scarred by violence and fear.

Sustain them with your healing presence and restoring grace.
Lead us in ways of compassion, justice, reconciliation, and peace,
so that we may take part in the work of healing
for all who have been affected.

God of Peace, we bring you our memories.
Help us to seek the truth and shape a more hopeful future.
