Over the last couple of days, we have received several questions about Masks, Singing and Social Distancing Mandates. Here are some answers to your questions.

• Can we sing inside? With or without masks
  A. We are recommending that you do not sing inside. The data isn’t there yet about the spread of the virus now that many are vaccinated. Sing outside all you want.  Here is some links to helpful data and video. The session needs to look at the data and weigh it against helping people feel welcome and safe
• Can we take off our masks inside if people are vaccinated?
  A: Technically you can. However, take into consideration those who are not vaccinated or are uncomfortable without the mask.  Take it slow. Meet outside without masks.  Have thoughtful conversations and communications about wearing masks.
• Do we need to continue taking “attendance” or signing in for contact tracing.
  A. No. That was before there was strong testing and contact tracers. New Jersey has a robust testing program and lots of contact tracers.
• Do we need to have our updated protocols and guidelines reviewed by the Property and Insurance team?
  A. If you haven’t ever sent in your protocols and guidelines than we STRONGLY recommend that you send your protocols to the Property and Insurance Team ( send it to office@highlandspresbyterynj.org) .  If you have done that in the past and would like a review you are welcome to send it in but it is not required.
• Do we still need to social distance inside?
  A: Again technically (as of June 4) you do not. However, remember that someone may not be vaccinated and is vulnerable to being infected with the virus. You need to focus on how to make ALL people feel welcome and comfortable in attending worship and congregational gatherings.
• Do we still need to have an online presence?
  A. yes.
• Could you elaborate?
  A. The church has been needing to make to move to online ministry for many years. With the pandemic we were thrown into the deep end. We learned and are still learning how to be a church online. Over the summer and throughout the year we will continue to provide conversations and resources on how to develop that online presence.  There is a lot of really cool things emerging about online ministry. Don’t stop now. Remember there are people still needing to join you for worship and other things online.
• Can we mandate vaccines for our employees?
  A. According to the Office of the General Assembly counsel, the answer is yes you can. This should be a conversation with your personnel committee and session.
