12-Steps and the Christian Faith

According to well-known author Richard Rohr, Alcoholic Anonymous’ 12-Step program will go down in history as “America’s greatest contribution to practical spirituality in the 20th century!” AA and its related programs have only expanded their reach as the addiction crisis has grown.

Meet the Rev. Tom Scornavacchi, who is among those who stand at the intersection of recovery and faith. He is the pastor of Common Ground a compassionate, spiritual community that embraces the worthiness and brokenness of all people.

Many churches host 12-Step groups, and thanks be to God for that. Common Ground goes a step beyond, as many but not all of its worshippers are part of recovery communities. Together they explore the “common ground” that lies beneath the 12-steps and an inclusive Christian faith.

Pastor Tom joined Common Ground in 2010 and was ordained as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 2013. As a person in long-term recovery, Pastor Tom combines the wisdom and practice of the 12-steps with the forgiveness and grace that comes from his Lutheran faith.
